CPS Energy stands out as a leader in generating electricity through renewable sources. San Antonio is ranked first in Texas and fifth in the nation for total solar capacity. CPS Energy is second in Texas for wind power.
Those renewable resources make up about one-fifth of CPS Energy’s power generation. Nuclear power from the South Texas Project makes up 14% of the utility’s portfolio, and coal produces about 18% of CPS Energy’s electricity. Natural gas currently accounts for 46% of the utility’s power generation.
Between 2025 and 2029, several of CPS Energy’s aging gas plants are scheduled for retirement and its two remaining coal plants will either be repurposed or closed. Meanwhile, the utility is working to further develop power and energy storage solutions given that it needs to add 115 megawatts of more generating capacity every year to support our community’s growth. That’s enough to power approximately 23,000 homes.
Determining the right mix of generation sources is a complex matter that CPS Energy leaders and its Board of Trustees are always focused on, ensuring that the utility is prepared for tomorrow with our community in mind. Balancing priorities — including reliability, competitive pricing and sustainability — is critically important. And CPS Energy can’t do it without you.
CPS Energy is gathering input from the public on how it will power our community as we continue to be the fastest-growing city in the nation. The path forward will look at growth while meeting the goals of the City of San Antonio’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, which calls for carbon neutrality by 2050.
CPS Energy’s Rate Advisory Committee is weighing nine portfolio concept options:
• All renewable energy sources (6 portfolio concepts)
• All gas (1 portfolio concept)
• Blended, diversified and balanced generation resources (2 portfolio concepts)
The community’s input on each of the potential scenarios is imperative. There are many ways for members of the public to learn more about CPS Energy’s plans for future power generation, with two of the easiest being open house events on Dec. 1 and a virtual town hall on Dec. 8.
