Our News

What is nonprofit news?

Nonprofit news outlets are an alternative to traditional for-profit news companies. Nonprofit news organizations are created for and committed to the communities they serve and also rely on them for financial support. The nonprofit news model aims to make news more accessible to those who can’t afford to pay for news. Nonprofit news organizations are also nonpartisan. The San Antonio Report is a proud member of the Institute for Nonprofit News. You can find more information about nonprofit news and INN by clicking here.

What kind of news does the San Antonio Report cover?

We cover local and regional stories that impact our community, including topics such as Business & Development, Government & Politics, Education, Environment, Arts & Culture, and much more. We never cover sensational crime stories just for the sake of clicks. We’re thoughtful and dedicated to telling the most accurate and robust version of stories in our city.

Membership vs. Subscription

We define members as any individual who makes a donation to support the San Antonio Report. Membership comes with benefits, and most readers cite wanting to support our work and mission as reason for giving. The term subscriber, while used often in national media like the Washington Post or Wall Street Journal and locally at the Express-News, for us means a reader is signed up to receive our free email newsletters.

Please also note that we are not a traditional newspaper, where a reader pays to receive the news. Instead, our news is free and readers like you who value our work and wish it to continue donate to ensure it does indeed continue. Because we are a nonprofit news outlet, when you contribute to the San Antonio Report you directly sustain our mission-driven reporting so all in the metro area can access quality coverage. We do not have a paywall like so many other news sources, and your regular donation makes this and our work possible.

How is the San Antonio Report funded?

The San Antonio Report is funded by grants and donations from businesses, other nonprofit organizations, and readers like you. We also receive funds from businesses who purchase advertising on our website and in our newsletters and sponsor our events. If you would like to donate to the San Antonio Report and support our mission, you can do so here. For information about advertising, visit this page.

When/how do you disclose financial support in articles?

You can read our Donor and Financial Transparency Policy here. If the subject of an article is a financial supporter of the San Antonio Report, there will be a disclosure at the bottom of the article. All sponsored articles are clearly marked as such at the top of the page. Financial support from businesses and/or individuals does not influence our coverage. The San Antonio Report is an independent newsroom.
