For this week’s Something Monday casual, social, informative bike ride, we’ll be meeting with Steven Schauer, communications manager at the San Antonio River Authority, at SARA’s river-front location in the historic King William neighborhood (100 E. Guenther Street).
Steven is an experienced guide and a walking encyclopedia when it comes to the San Antonio River and its parts.
We’ll be meeting at 6:15 p.m. at the San Antonio B-cycle station at Roosevelt Park (42 Mission Road) and riding north for a short ride (as the nights are approaching earlier in the evening these days) at 6:30 p.m. B-cycles come equipped with lights, but if you’re riding your own wheels, be sure to remember your lights to comply with local ordinance.
Though the San Antonio River Improvement Plan came to a head on Saturday with the Mission Reach’s successful grand opening, there is continual work that needs to be done to ensure a healthy, beautiful river and aquifer. Steven will be demonstrating the importance of watershed management and introducing new “Watershed Wise” programing including educational and volunteer opportunities.
“There’s a little bit of labor and educational offerings as well,” Steven said.
The program is also the embodiment of a more calculated, organized approach to emergency restoration assistance after flooding. Much like volunteers with “Keep San Antonio Beautiful” pick up trash during Fiesta, these “Watershed W.I.S.E. Warriors” will be on hand to deal with trash that makes its way to the San Antonio River – before and after it gets to the river.
These opportunities, like the watershed, itself stretch far beyond San Antonio and Bexar County, he said. “We need to help get that message across that the watershed is all connected, so what happens up (or down) stream, impacts us.”
He’ll be presenting a model of the watershed and answering any questions the group has about watershed management, the San Antonio River Improvement Project, or any other topics that may arise.
