But before that, the Institute of Texan Cultures observes the Lunar New Year with its annual Asian Festival, the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo kicks off with its annual parade and cattle drive, and an ABBA tribute musical production lands at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre.

Beginner Bird Walk at Brooks
Every first Saturday, the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center hosts a bird walk for beginner birders. A guide will teach you how to identify birds and how to use binoculars before exploring the Greenline at Brooks for bird species. Binoculars will be provided for those who don’t own a pair. The bird walk starts at the butterfly kite statue in the parks’ main area. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, closed-toe shoes, and water. The event is free, but please RSVP by emailing MLAC@audubon.org.

Michael Middlebrooks reads his new book, The Adventures of Mattie, at the Salado Outdoor Classroom at Phil Hardberger Park. Fourth Annual Bexar County Rodéo Breakfast

Western Heritage Parade & Cattle Drive
It’s rodeo time! The annual parade and cattle drive kicks off the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and begins under Interstate 35 on West Houston Street at 11 a.m. Saturday. The parade will go east toward Alamo Street, turn south and then end at La Villita. For early risers, there is a Rodeo Wrangler Breakfast at La Villita at 9 a.m. with games, family activities, and biscuits and gravy.

Symposium: Alamo Plaza’s Role in Bexar County’s Civil Rights Legacy
On Saturday, five presenters will speak about the civil rights history of Bexar County. Landscape architect and local historian Everett Fly, Tara Dudley of the University of Texas at Austin, Bexar County’s Bruce Winders, Todd Moye of the University of North Texas, and Kathryn O’Rourke of Trinity University will focus their discussion on Alamo Plaza. Asian Festival
The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Institute of Texan Culture hosts its Asian Festival each year to celebrate the Lunar New Year (which occurred Saturday, Jan. 25) and the numerous cultures of Asia. Festival attendees can experience foods, music, dance, martial arts, shopping, and entertainment. Tickets for adults cost $12 before the event and $15 at the gate. The DoSeum’s Author Series with Jon Lasser
