The San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs face off Sunday in the 54th Super Bowl. But before that, the Institute of Texan Cultures observes the Lunar New Year with its annual Asian Festival, the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo kicks off with its annual parade and cattle drive, and an ABBA tribute musical production lands at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre.

Santiago Jiménez Jr., also known as “El Chief,” performs Friday night at the Lonesome Rose. Nashville artists Emily Nenni and Teddy and the Rough Riders also bring their country sound to the bar. Admission costs $5 at the door.

Beginner Bird Walk at Brooks

Every first Saturday, the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center hosts a bird walk for beginner birders. A guide will teach you how to identify birds and how to use binoculars before exploring the Greenline at Brooks for bird species. Binoculars will be provided for those who don’t own a pair. The bird walk starts at the butterfly kite statue in the parks’ main area. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, closed-toe shoes, and water. The event is free, but please RSVP by emailing MLAC@audubon.org.

Storytime: The Adventures of Mattie

Michael Middlebrooks reads his new book, The Adventures of Mattie, at the Salado Outdoor Classroom at Phil Hardberger Park. The book follows Mattie, a Madagascar hissing cockroach in the face of danger. Other naturalists will read their favorite stories, and kids can meet a hissing cockroach. Fourth Annual Bexar County Rodéo Breakfast

Get free breakfast tacos at Commissioner Chico Rodriguez’s (Pct. 1) satellite office on Pleasanton Road Saturday morning. Tacos are first come, first served, and vendors will have 13,000 of them to distribute. There will also be live music, children’s activities, and information booths.

Western Heritage Parade & Cattle Drive

It’s rodeo time! The annual parade and cattle drive kicks off the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and begins under Interstate 35 on West Houston Street at 11 a.m. Saturday. The parade will go east toward Alamo Street, turn south and then end at La Villita. For early risers, there is a Rodeo Wrangler Breakfast at La Villita at 9 a.m. with games, family activities, and biscuits and gravy.

Alamo Round Up

The Alamo is also observing the kick-off of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo with a special cowboy-themed day. Enjoy demonstrations ranging from branding to campfire cooking, and discussions about life on the cattle trail. Don’t forget your cowboy boots at home.

Symposium: Alamo Plaza’s Role in Bexar County’s Civil Rights Legacy

On Saturday, five presenters will speak about the civil rights history of Bexar County. Landscape architect and local historian Everett Fly, Tara Dudley of the University of Texas at Austin, Bexar County’s Bruce Winders, Todd Moye of the University of North Texas, and Kathryn O’Rourke of Trinity University will focus their discussion on Alamo Plaza. The symposium will take place in the Bexar County Courthouse’s double-height courtroom. The event has limited seating, so RSVP at conserve@saconservation.org.

Asian Festival

The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Institute of Texan Culture hosts its Asian Festival each year to celebrate the Lunar New Year (which occurred Saturday, Jan. 25) and the numerous cultures of Asia. Festival attendees can experience foods, music, dance, martial arts, shopping, and entertainment. Tickets for adults cost $12 before the event and $15 at the gate. Children ages 6 to 12 pay $5, while children 5 years old and younger may enter for free. Find more information and tickets here.

The DoSeum’s Author Series with Jon Lasser

Jon Lasser, author of Grow Happy, will read his book aloud and share the story of gardener Kiko who cultivates her garden as well as her happiness.
