As we shine a light on Child Abuse Prevention Month this April, Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) underscores the critical need for advocates for children in Bexar County. Last year, more than 4,600 children in Bexar County endured abuse or neglect, resulting in 15 tragic deaths. When severe abuse and neglect are reported, children are removed from their homes and placed in temporary foster care or with relatives while their cases undergo investigation and review by the court. For the child, this experience is traumatic. Suddenly, through no fault of their own, they find themselves in a situation where they must leave behind everything familiar to them: their family, belongings, clothes, and favorite toys. These items provided them comfort and a sense of normalcy. This is a traumatic and heartbreaking experience that will potentially leave a lasting impact on the child’s sense of safety and security.

CASA plays a crucial role in supporting vulnerable children by recruiting and providing a “Court Appointed Special Advocate,” a volunteer who supports children experiencing foster care. Currently, over 2,000 children in Bexar County are in need of an advocate.

Angie White, president and CEO of CASA, stresses the importance of community involvement in identifying signs of child abuse: “If you see something, say something.” Factors such as stress, substance abuse, and poverty contribute to these alarming statistics, underscoring the need for the community to recognize signs of abuse and support families in need. To report a situation, use the Texas Abuse Hotline or call 800-252-5400.

Join the cause: We need advocates

CASA’s objective is to assign an advocate to each child experiencing foster care. CASA welcomes individuals or couples from all walks of life. After completing volunteer training and being sworn in by a judge, advocates are assigned to a child or children, committing an average of 15 hours per month to advocate in court, visit the child, and meet with other involved parties.

If you are interested in making a difference in a child’s life, sign up for an information session at CASA-SATX.org to learn more about becoming a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate.

Together, we can ensure that every child in Bexar County receives the support and care they deserve.
