Our journey into fostering began long before we officially decided to become foster parents. It started with a leap of faith that led us from California to Texas.

Last August, my husband and I felt a strong, inexplicable calling to move to Texas. We had no family here, no secured living arrangements and no concrete plans. But we trusted that this move was part of a bigger plan. So, with little more than our faith to guide us, we packed up and set out on our journey.

Arriving in Texas, we faced several challenges, including nights spent sleeping in our car. It was during this uncertain time that my husband noticed Great Oaks Fellowship Church from the freeway. With no other plans that Sunday, we decided to attend their service.

This decision turned out to be a pivotal moment in our lives. At the church, we connected with an incredibly generous woman who offered us a place to stay until we could get on our feet. Her kindness and support were clear signs that we were being guided on this path.

Our move to Texas was not just about finding a new home; it was about finding our purpose. One Sunday, Pastor David delivered a sermon about the urgent need for foster families. He spoke about the countless children who needed loving, stable environments. After the service, there was a meeting hosted by the South Texas Alliance for Orphans for those interested in learning more about fostering. I felt a strong pull to attend. My husband was hesitant at first, but he joined me.

During the meeting, we listened to heartfelt stories from foster parents who shared their experiences. Their stories moved me and my husband deeply. As we drove home, he turned to me and said, “Babe, now I want to do it.” I felt a newfound excitement and determination to become part of this community and make a difference in the lives of children who needed it most.

Fostering was not something we had initially planned when we moved from California. It wasn’t even on our radar. But through this journey, we realized that God had a plan for us that we never could have imagined. We were meant to provide a safe and loving home for children in need.

For those considering fostering or adopting, my advice is simple: start by praying about it. Then, seek out someone who has been through the process. Talk to them, learn from their experiences, and gather as much information as you can. The journey to becoming a foster parent is long and can be challenging, but it is incredibly rewarding. We are still in the process, waiting to welcome children into our home, but we feel more prepared and supported than ever before.

Our story is a testament to the incredible work the Alliance is doing in our community. As part of their campaign to launch 200 new foster families this year, we hope our journey inspires others to take that leap of faith. Fostering is not just about providing a home; it’s about offering hope, stability and love to children who need it most.

We are excited to continue this journey and see where it leads us. If you feel the call, we encourage you to take that first step. To get started, visit alliance4orphans.org and take their Foster Care Quiz.
