Graduation ceremonies for three high schools in the San Antonio Independent School District are being moved indoors from the Alamo Stadium to the Alamo Convocation Center due to forecasted high temperatures, according to an announcement on the district’s website.

The announcement comes amid sweltering heat that led several campuses to close due to failing air conditioning systems last week, although students and teachers returned for the final days of class. Highs are expected to be 100 degrees on Wednesday, and 99 degrees the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service, which predicts an excessive heat warning for the area.

Other high schools in the region completed graduation ceremonies in recent days.

The relocation was determined “for the safety of our graduates and guests,” according to the announcement, which included the dates and times for the ceremonies:

  • Brackenridge High School, June 4 at 8 p.m.
  • Sam Houston High School, June 7 at 8 p.m.
  • Highlands High School, June 8 at 8 p.m.

All guests are required to present a ticket for entry to the events, according to district spokesman Maury Vasquez.

Due to class sizes, Sam Houston and Highlands high school graduates receive 15 tickets each, and Brackenridge High School graduates receive 10 tickets each, Vasquez said.

The Edgewood Independent School District also altered graduation plans, announcing that graduation ceremonies on Wednesday and Thursday will start 30 minutes later than originally scheduled due the weather.

Ceremonies will now start at 8:30 p.m., with gates to Edgewood Veterans Stadium opening at 7:15 p.m.
